Serious delays in ‘New Igoumenitsa Port Phase III-1’ project

The ‘New Igoumenitsa Port Phase III-1’ project is an important development project for Epirus which was included in the ‘Accessibility Improvement, 2007-2013’ NSRF Operational Programme on 24 November 2010.
The project was put out to tender in March 2011, since when construction work has been seriously delayed, as the contractor awarded the project only completed 2.5% of the overall works before being replaced by a new contractor. Work resumed in November 2014, when a final completion date of 11 May 2017 was approved for the project.
However, according to the answer to a parliamentary question given by the competent minister on 3 April 2015, the project will require an estimated two additional years to complete.
Thus the completion date for the project is to be moved back to 2019.
At the same time, pedestrian and road traffic problems have arisen, as works on the external roads, pavements, lighting and so forth included in the ‘New Igoumenitsa Port Phase II’ project have not been completed.
In view of the above, will the Commission say:
| — | Has it investigated the reasons for the delays in the ‘New Igoumenitsa Port Phase III-1’ project and, if so, has it held those responsible to account? |
| — | What measures does it intend to take in order to monitor progress in works and action taken to expedite the ‘New Igoumenitsa Port Phase III-1’ project, which is being funded primarily from EU resources? |

The Commission would like to inform the Honourable Member that the project ‘New Port of Igoumenitsa – Phase III-1’ has not been co-financed by European Union funds in the 2007 – 2013 period.
