Political disapproval of Ms Mogherini on the grounds of her unlawful and provocative statement in which she referred to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as ‘Macedonia’
When referring to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) during a joint press conference which she gave in Brussels on 4 March 2015 together with Commissioner Johannes Hahn, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Ms Federica Mogherini repeatedly used the term ‘Macedonia’, thereby infringing international law and the corresponding UN and EU resolutions.
In view of the fact that the President of the Commission is politically responsible for ensuring that the Commission operates within the law, will Commission President Juncker say on behalf of the Commission:
| 1. | Whether it disapproves of the above unlawful and provocative action on the part of Ms Mogherini in referring repeatedly to FYROM as ‘Macedonia’? |
| 2. | What other measures it intends to take to ensure that no members and/or servants of the Commission refer to FYROM as ‘Macedonia’ again in the future? |

| Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission | |
| The European Commission uses the full provisional reference under which the country was admitted to the United Nations (UNSCR 817/93), i.e. ‘the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’, pending a mutually acceptable solution to the ‘name issue’.
The Commission reiterated in its 2014 Enlargement Package Progress Report(1) that maintaining good neighbourly relations, including a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution to the name issue, under the auspices of the UN, remains essential. The Commission also reiterated that decisive steps should be taken towards resolving the ‘name issue’. |
