Survey by the Hellenic Statistical Authority on income and living conditions in Greece

15 October 2014
E-007961-14
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Notis Marias (ECR)

The destructive policy, which formed part of the 2010 Memorandum, led to the impoverishment of the vast majority of Greece’s population.

According to the 2013 survey on income and living conditions published by the Hellenic Statistical Authority on 13 October 2014, 35% of the total population of Greece currently runs the risk of poverty and social exclusion. This figure is triple that reported in 2010.

Specifically, in terms of the poor population, four out of ten cannot afford certain foodstuffs, eight out of ten report financial difficulty when faced with unexpected but necessary expenses amounting to EUR 550, five out of ten state they are unable to pay for adequate heating and six out of ten report difficulty in paying their monthly bills, such as electricity, water and gas, on time.

It is clear from the above survey, that the deprivation of basic goods and services is not only an issue faced by the poor population of Greece but also by those who are not poor.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:

1. As a member of the Troika, does it stand by the stringent economic adjustment and austerity policy, which have been put in place under the Memorandum in Greece?
2. What action does it intend to take in order to compensate Greece and its citizens for the tremendous humanitarian crisis it has caused, as a member of the Troika, through the implementation of the Memoranda?
